Rich & Amanda’s Engagement Session – Pittsburgh, PA

This post will be rougher than most, I think.  So, I’m just going to jump right in. This post will be rougher than most, I think.  So, I’m just going to jump right in.

Rich is a long-time dear friend of Rachel’s.  So, being able to photograph his wedding with his super-great fiance Amanda was great news to us!  The engagement session was full of beautiful light, great locations, and a romantic and fun couple too.  🙂

So we were excited to post their engagement session on our blog, and had it all prepared when something awful happened.  Rich had been involved in an accident, had a skull fracture, and was life flighted to a hospital.

I remember at the time I was on Skype with Rachel trying to figure out one thing or another with our business when she stared at her Facebook screen looking horrified.

“What?!,”  she was saying, “What?!”

It was a little while before I could get her to explain that Rich was in the hospital and in critical condition.  It was shocking.  We had just photographed them weeks earlier, and now one of Rachel’s lifelong friends was in critical condition.  Details were fuzzy and people were sending massive amounts of prayers and support on Facebook to Amanda and Rich, sending their love out to this awesome couple we get to call friends.

After what must have been an excruciating and trying time of about a week or two for Amanda, Rich suddenly was showing enormous leaps in improvement.  He went from having tubes for feeding and breathing in an induced coma to speaking and following commands in a few days.  A day later Amanda came in to his room to see him sitting in his chair.  Now he is resting at his parent’s home and recovering more and more.

What I’m left with after seeing this from the sidelines, is knowing how privileged we are to photograph this love between them, how grateful I am that Rich is well and that he has Amanda to be at his side, how fragile life is, and how lovely and beautiful all of this will be on their wedding day.  So, I wanted to leave this post with something Rich told us when we talked with them about their wedding before any of this ever happened.  He told us that in all his life he can’t imagine seeing anything else before or after that is as beautiful as Amanda walking down the aisle to him on the day they are married.  And I think that’s true, even more so now.

So glad you are doing much better Rich!

Alexis and John are getting married in Naperville later in 2013, but were excited at the idea of a classic downtown Chicago engagement session involving the Millennium Park area and especially the Lurie Gardens where John proposed to Alexis!  There were a couple of things I loved about this session, one of course being able to be with this great couple and walk around a beautiful area getting to know them more.  Another was the great picnic props they brought for a portion of their session which added to the romance of the evening.  And finally, loving the fading sun as the session neared the end, casting beautiful light on and about them with the Chicago skyline or Buckingham Fountain in the background.

Joshua & Jessica’s Stay-At-Home Engagement Session – Chicago, IL

September 11th, 2012

When Jessica brought up the idea of a staying-at-home engagement session, she said she wanted to have photos that reflected their life together, to have a “magazine-styled” session of their life.  To which I thought, “OKAY!!!”  We really love doing sessions like this, and they don’t come along very often, in fact, this was our […]

When Jessica brought up the idea of a staying-at-home engagement session, she said she wanted to have photos that reflected their life together, to have a “magazine-styled” session of their life.  To which I thought, “OKAY!!!”  We really love doing sessions like this, and they don’t come along very often, in fact, this was our first engagement session like this ever.

What a fun and really personal and intimate way of documenting their lives and love together.  I can’t say enough about it.

During the session I was making sure to take detail photographs here and there, of magazine stacks, artwork on the wall, etc.  Personally, when I’ve gone through old family videos or old photos, there are little hints in the background of those that speak to how our lives were years ago.  My hope is that later in life, these can bring old stories to mind that way my family photos do.  🙂

Anyways, I know I’m rambling a little bit, but it’s only because the session brought out my photojournalism leanings, and being invited to document their lives in an intimate way was a lot of fun.

Thanks to Joshua & Jessica for the idea and opening up your home and yourselves for the session!

Sonya & Dave’s Anniversary Session – West Lake Park, Davenport, IA

July 10th, 2012

Recently Rachel and I photographed a friend of mine from when I was in high school (Sonya) and her husband of one year!  They wanted to do an anniversary session to have some more portrait time together using their wedding attire (which was awesome by the way!) and also some of their bunting (also awesome!) Recently Rachel and I photographed a friend of mine from when I was in high school (Sonya) and her husband of one year!  They wanted to do an anniversary session to have some more portrait time together using their wedding attire (which was awesome by the way!) and also some of their bunting (also awesome!) which made for a great session.  It was also at the end of a string of 2 weddings, 2 engagement sessions, and a convention all within 6 days.  So it was nice to have a fun and relaxing session with an old friend, meet her guy, and catch up too!  Also, I should mention that Sonya makes pies you can buy and you can view her facebook page (Dandylion Pies) here:  http://www.facebook.com/pages/Dandylion-Pies/122958844480328

Thanks Sonya & Dave!

After the above photo, we decided to swap some of their accessories, which was pretty fun!

Oh, and one last note.  My favorite photo of this session was the awesome one caught by Rachel.  It’s the bottom right photo of the XOXO bunting.  I didn’t even see that fabric when we were there!  Great reason for two photographers.  Love how she sees things I don’t!

Recently my younger brother Jeffrey got engaged!  He and Melissa met in Germany some years back and ever since then they’ve grown more and more inseparable.

For their engagement session, we all decided to just incorporate a lot of fun visual date ideas for them.  And since Jeffrey and Melissa are both musicians, how could we not feature their music in their engagement session???

Anyways, Rachel and I had a lot of fun with them flying kites (on a non-windy day, which is difficult!), listening to them play instruments at Lowell Park, and flying paper lanterns with a part of a Bible verse they wrote on it from 1 Corinthians 13:8.

With my sister getting married last October and Jeffrey in August, our family is growing and it’s really exciting and warming to be a part of.
